Public warned against false info on social media platforms

Director-General of Health Services Dr. Anil Jasinghe yesterday said that the Health Ministry will release press communiqué to educate the people about the daily updates on the Coronavirus situation to prevent circulating false information on social media in this regard.

He was addressing a media briefing at the Government Information Department in Narahenpita yesterday

He said that rumors that the son of the coronavirus patient at the Infectious Diseases Hospital (IDH) has contracted the virus are completely false. He said the student had undergone medical tests and found free of any symptoms.

The COVID-19 patient in Sri Lanka is treated at the Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH) and his family members have been quarantined, he said.

The places that he visited are inspected by the health officials, he said.

Information and Mass Media, Higher Education, Technology and Innovation Minister Bandula Gunawardene said that this is a global pandemic and no government can stop such an epidemic. Opposition is trying to create fears among the people about quarantine centers. However, no one should refuse quarantine since we all have a responsibility to find a way out of this problem. The President and the Prime Minister try tirelessly to resolve this problem as the epidemic could have been more serious later.

It is the responsibility of the media to provide correct information without spreading false information. The Quarantine Ordinary is quite powerful and stern action can be taken against the people spreading false information.

“We have been advised by President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa to bring experts in this filed and educate people on the real situation of the epidemic and the precautionary steps,” he added.
