Galle district registers increase of nearly 90,000 voters

The total number of registered voters in the Galle district qualified for the forthcoming Parliamentary election marks a rise of 8,960 in comparison to that of the total voters registered at the recent Presidential Election, Galle district Election Office disclosed.

According to the electoral register, there were 858,749 eligible voters in the Galle district for the last Presidential Election. The total number of voters registered for the upcoming General Election is 867,709, showing an increase of 8,960.

However, despite the increase in the number of voters, the total number of Parliamentary slots for the district has declined from 10 seats to nine. In 1989 too, the Galle district lost one Parliamentary seat, making the total 10.

Before 1989, the Galle district had 11 seats. This time too, the Hiniduma electorate has the highest number of registered voters, while the Balapitiya constituency has the lowest number of voters, the officials of the Election Office said.

Following are the total numbers of voters for each of the electorates in the Galle district: Balapitiya – 55,396; Ambalangoda – 80,275; Karandeniya – 77,443; Bentara-Elpitiya – 93,866; Hiniduma – 105,293; Baddegama – 101,161; Rathgama – 81,826; Galle – 84,685; Akmeemana – 102,419 and Habaraduwa – 85,345.
