The former UNP-led government which was sure of defeat at the Presidential Election did not present the budget for this year and spent an immense amount of money during the election that was not included in the budget proposals for the corresponding year, said Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) National Organiser and former Minister Basil Rajapaksa at Naiwala Veyangoda yesterday.

He added that they did it purposely and attempted to put President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and the government led by Mahinda Rajapaksa into difficulty as they were handed over an empty Treasury. Although the leaders and ministers strived hard to run the government, it was impossible and so the government had to call for a General Election.

Basil Rajapaksa added that hence an election is impending and the SLPP has to win it, for if it lost, the people would not have a country to talk of anymore. “We can forgive but never forget,” said Basil Rajapaksa.

He said that forgiving is something but not to forget is important so that they do not fail again. He added that some politicians who stood against the SLPP while they were in Opposition are contesting under the SLPP coalition.

Basil Rajapaksa said some of the SLPP members objected vehemently against granting nominations to those who earlier said that they would made the Flower Bud walk along the roads following the Presidential Election. He added that however they were ready to forgive.

He made these observations on Wednesday at the launching of the book Prasanna: The untold story of the people’s struggle written by Dinamina Associate Editor Dhanushka Godakumbura at the Naiwala Jayasinghe City Center, Veyangoda.

Basil Rajapaksa took part the event as the chief guest. The book features the people’s struggle that Prime Minister and former President Mahinda Rajapaksa launched from the time of his defeat at the Presidential Election on January 8, 2015, to the Presidential Election held on November 16, 2019, from Minister Prasanna Ranatunga’s point of view.

He said that Prasanna could reveal many untold stories since he has been one of the significant persons who stood with him (Basil Rajapaksa) taking brave decisions to steer the SLPP in the proper direction. “It was Prasanna who said that we should contest under the Lotus Bud symbol. It was from Minuwangoda that the proposal moved to contest at the Local Government Election under the same symbol,” Rajapaksa said. “Prasanna rendered an unforgettable service at the past Presidential Election as he could balance the votes that we lost from North and East of the country.”

The Kelaniya University Head of the Sanskrit Department Professor Induragare Dammaratana Thera also spoke on the occasion, while Minister Prasanna Ranatunga delivered the welcome speech.
