SLPP, SLFP must unite for country’s sake - SLFP spokesman

The country will not prosper unless unity prevails in the alliance between the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), SLFP spokesman Weerakumara Dissanayake said

He was addressing media yesterday at the SLFP Headquarters in Colombo.Weerakumara said that unity should be protected in the alliance both to receive a significant victory at the forthcoming election and to develop the country. “Neither the SLPP nor the SLFP can obtain a victory at the forthcoming general election if the two parties contest separately,” he said.

Asked whether the SLFP receives the intended quota for nominations, Weerakumara said discussions are ongoing to reach a common stance relating to nominations.

Speaking on former United National Party MP Ravi Karunanayake’s court evasion, he said Karunanayake should act in accordance with the law of the country without playing hide-and-seek. “A national level politician shouldn’t act like this and he should have to have courage to face the law of the country without trying to shy away from the law.

“It is unethical for a public representative to act like this. During the previous regime he managed to evade the law due to the political clout he had,” he said. Similar to Karunanayake, the COPE has levelled allegations on former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe for his intervention in the Central Bank bond scam.Legal action should be taken against Wikremesinghe also as it has been reported that there was direct mediation from former PM Wickremasinghe in the the bond issue.

Weerakumara said everyone is duty bound to dedicate to eradicate the Covid-19 as the first local positive case of Covid-19 has already been detected.“A discussion should be held on how to face this threat,” he said.

When he was questioned why there is a delay in exercising law against one of former Navy Commanders in connection with the abduction of 11 youth, Weerakumara said no one is above the law.
