All measures taken to safeguard public from Covid-19 - Health Minister

All possible steps will be taken to safeguard Sri Lankans from the COVID-19 pandemic and Sri Lanka will take strict measures to make sure that the COVID-19 virus does not affect Sri Lankans, Health, Nutrition and Indigenous Medicine Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi said.

She said it was the responsibility of all Sri Lankans returning from countries like China, Italy, Korea to undergo a 14 day compulsory quarantine to protect their aged parents at home, their children, loved ones and the entire country.

Addressing a press conference held at the Health Ministry Auditorium in Colombo yesterday, Wanniarachchi said Sri Lankans returning from COVID-19 affected countries should not act in a selfish manner because first of all such a behaviour will threaten lives of their aged parents, relations at their own home. “Then it affects other family members and the entire country. If a healthy person who returns from an affected country goes home and stays with the family, he/she can pass the virus to the aged parents, children, pregnant women, family members who suffer from other medical conditions such as diabetes. The disease can kill them. It takes only 14 days to protect them.

Minister Wanniarachchi pointed out that if COVID-19 hits Sri Lanka in a major way, the country will be face a huge disaster because even the well developed countries could not face the disease successfully. A developing country like Sri Lanka will face a huge disaster without adequate number of ICU beds because even the well developed countries such as Italy and Korea face this situation now. Therefore, the Government will take strict action in connection with quarantining Sri Lankans returning from affected countries.

The National Action Committee on preventing COVID-19 spreading in the country met President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa at 4.00 pm yesterday (11) to discuss the topic. Sri Lanka took all required steps on time so far and will take steps to protect the people. It is the responsibility of Sri Lankans returning from affected countries and the public to follow instructions given by the Government without being selfish, she added.
