Four J’pura students arrested after ‘tyre’ tragedy

Police arrested four Sri Jayawardenepura University Management Faculty students over the incident in which a first-year student sustained life threatening injuries. Police had identified three students suspected of being involved in the incident. Acting Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sudantha Liyanage said that if they are found guilty of this incident they would be expelled.

The victim Pasindhu Lakshan, a first-year student at the Sri Jayawardenapura University sustained critical skull and brain injuries and was admitted to the National Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

It was reported that senior students alleged to have been intoxicated, had rolled a tractor tyre down a flight of stairs which had caused grave injuries to the victim’s head.

University’s acting Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sudantha Liyanage said the final party marking the end of the ragging season had been held on March 5. Although the event ended at around 8.30 pm, a group of students including Pasindu Hirushan remained at the university premises past midnight.

The arrested students were from the Management Faculty. The Colombo South Crimes Division (CCD) is conducting investigations.
