Rural development drive in Matara begins

Rs. 1,300 mn allocated

The Government has taken measures to allocate Rs. 1,300 million to enhance the rural infrastructural development activities in the Matara District which had been a long-felt need.

According to Planning Director of the Matara District Secretariat M.C. Siriwardana, the proposed development projects have already been commenced at the Divisional Secretariat level in the district.

A total of 650 Grama Niladhari (GN) divisions in the district will be improved through these development endeavours initiated by the present administration under the leadership of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa. Those roads had been neglected without being renovated for nearly five years. People were urging the authorities to take measures to mend them and yet their requests have not been answered.

Siriwardana said top priority will be given to reconstructing the undeveloped rural road network in the district. Construction and reconstruction of walls and ditches on both sides of roads, metalling and tarring, and the application of cement blocks on broken and dilapidated roads are included in these development activities in the region. Under this programme, Rs. two million will be spent for the development of each GN division in the district. A total sum of Rs. 1,300 million has been set aside for the development of the whole district by the Government.

Receipt of development proposals at Divisional Secretariat level in this regard is over at the moment and the proposed development activities are underway. Some of these projects have already been completed and the rest are successfully in progress and expected to be completed before the end of this year.

“The enhancement of infrastructural facilities in the undeveloped areas in the Matara District would be the prime aim of the Government’s development drive,” Planning Director Siriwardana said.
