Incentives offered to boost coconut cultivation

The Coconut Cultivation Board has taken several steps to boost coconut cultivation in the Kurunegala district to cater to the needs of the consumer.

Under this programme, a coconut sapling of good quality produced by the Board can be purchased at a concessionary price of Rs.175. Its normal price is Rs. 275. For each well-maintained coconut sapling, an incentive of Rs.175 will be paid. Apart from that, Rs.12,000 will be paid per acre for digging the required ditches.

Coconut Cultivation Board Regional Manager W.M.S.M. Bandara said that although the price of coconut has risen due to climatic conditions, the price will drop during the Avuruddu season. He added that the dividing of coconut lands into smaller plots to construct houses has been one cause for the drop in harvest.
