Pre-school teachers seek enhanced monthly salary

Pre-school teachers in the Island Education Zone of the Northern Province met Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Minister Douglas Devananda at his office in Jaffna to place before him the difficulties and problems they face.

Pre-school teachers earn a paltry monthly allowance ranging between Rs. 3,000 to Rs. 6,000, and therefore they urged the Minister to make them permanent in their posts and pay them a salary similar to that paid to other state employees.

The Minister having listened to their grievances said although steps were taken at several instances to offer them an attractive pay during the tenure of the Mahinda Rajapaksa government, they were unable to do so due to the change of government and the lack of approval of the Northern Provincial Council.

The Minister said that although the other Tamil political leaders do not understand the problems of the Northern people, he is well aware of the issues they encounter and would take whatever steps needed to resolve these issues on the assumption of power after the forthcoming General Elections.
