Sadeera Samarawickrema-a run machine

He is a wicket-keeper batsman of the top order, in fact a couple of year’s back he represented Sri Lanka and expected him to be a permanent feature of the Sri Lankan side. He opened with Niroshan Dickwella and got a swift 38 runs. Unfortunately for him, Kusal Janith Perera and Niroshan Dickwella, hindered his continuity to represent Sri Lanka.

However at 23 years all is not lost and he eagerly awaits for his bat to do the talking at every available opportunity. I met Sadeera at the Colts Cricket Club pavilion, where he is the acting captain in the absence of Kusal Janith, who is mostly on national duty. He looked a well behaved young man, who never failed to mention that his father was his mentor. Samarawickrema hails from Kadawatha, a product of Thurstan College, later head hunted by St Joseph’s College Maradana due to his enormous talent and run making skills with the bat.

Samarawickrema Sr too, was a cricketer in his younger days, he is mustard keen and pushes Sadeera to perform well match after match. The 23 year- old Sadeera is also proud of the fact that he could build a house to call their own. What a fine example of a young cricketer who gives his family pride of place, Sadeera also recalled that he is a Christian, and he relied on his religion at times of stress.

Sadeera’s talent was such that at the age of 17years, he was elevated to play in the Joe/Pete big match. Together with Angelo Mathews and Tissara Perera , Sadeera had the distinction of playing in five big matches. He was quite a run- machine at St Josephs, notching up 10 centuries during his four year tenure there. He proudly recalled that he got a 100 in a session in the Big Match and he missed the record by a few runs.and he was also a prolific scorer on big match occasions, where he scored a plenty.

His achievements were duly recognized in no time, and was selected to the Sri Lanka under 19 squad of 30 players, and subsequently he was in the under 19 team. Kusal Mendis was the captain and Sadeera was the vice- captain, while Binura Fernando and Piyumal Perera were the other national caps in that team.

It was rather unfortunate that Sadeera couldn’t captain his College, perhaps because he was a newcomer lamented Sadeera. In the 2014 under 19 World Cup, he scored 5 fifties.

He joined Colts Cricket Club, and initially he could not get to play much due to the fact that a lot of Sri Lankan players were playing, one was Roshane Silva. In his third year at Colts, Samarawickrema got thousand runs, and scored 185 against the England Lions team, and in the same year he became the best Batsman in the Provincial tournament.

When Kusal Janith got injured he got the chance to open the batting and he got a 40 and a fifty but unfortunately was left out of two tours.

When inquired about the best coach he ever had, Sadeera mentioned that it was his father who moulded him from his younger days. His brother is Buddhi Samarawickrema who was once in the Sr Lanka squad now settled in Australia. During this season he was no 4 in the T20 batting ratings recalled Sadeera. He also mentioned that his only drawback was his impatience and thinks that he does not have a particular weakness. His opening partner at Colts is Sangeeth Cooray.

Mohamed Sami is the most difficult pace bowler he faced stated Sadeera due to his swing both ways and at a brisk pace. He is billed to play for L.B.Finance where Dhananjaya De Silva, Kusal Mendis, Shehan Jayasuriya and Lahiru Kumara are also playing with him.

His future plans are to be a permanent fixture in all formats for Sri Lanka. The future looks good for Sri Lankan cricket when wicket keeper batsmen of the calibre of Sadeera Samarawickrema are knocking on the door.
