Former Cambrian athlete Ramesh wins 10,000 metres event

Former Prince of Wales College long distance champion athlete M Sachendra Ramesh won the first place in the 10,000 metre race at the 31st National Youth Festival Athletic meet held at Anuradhapura. Also he came third in the 1500 matres and representing the Colombo District Team in 400x4 metres relay event they secured the second place.

Sachendra commenced his athletic career at Prince of Wales College in 2006 under Suminda Karunarathne and his present coach is Chaminda Perera. As an under ten athlete he ran in 50 and 75 metre races at the school athletic meets and won in 2006 and 2007. Then he shifted to 100, 200 and 400 metre events and won with ease. At the age of under 17 his coach advised him to take upto long distance and he did the 800 and 1500 metres and came first. When he was under 19 he took up to 5000 metres, 10000 metre and half marathon and he was the champion athlete in the Under 19 and 21 age groups at the schools sports meets.

Also he won these events at the Divisional Zonal and Provincial level and became the 8th in the national level.

Participating from 2016 to date at the Youth National Meets he secured places in time to time. He was the school athletic and Games Captain of the School in 2015.
