Six dead in Lunugamvehera accident

Six people were killed and three others were critically injured in an accident near the 22nd mile post at K-Junction in Lunugamvehera in the early hours of yesterday.

According to the police, the van travelling towards Kataragama on the Mattala-Kataragama Road ran off the road and crashed into a tree after the driver lost control.

“Nine people were in the van at the time of the accident and they are all residents of Unawatuna, Galle,” Police said. They had been on a pilgrimage to Kataragama.

The deceased have been identified as Weralage Prasad (23),H.Pushpakumara (53),Mapa Chameera (28), Dhanushka Ramachandra (30), Nuwan Sampath (31) and Waruna Kumara all residents of Galle. The three injured people are said to be in critical condition have been admitted to the Hambantota and Debarawewa Hospitals. Police is investigating.
