Arrest of Bangladeshi nationals : HC clarifies

The High Commission of Bangladesh in Colombo in a statement issued yesterday said it noted with concern the news reports in some local media alleging involvement of Bangladeshi nationals in a reported case of ‘abduction/kidnapping’ of a 10-year old Sri Lankan girl in Kandy.

On March 7 (Saturday), Police arrested the following four Bangladesh nationals (Md Marufur Rahman, Mohammad Masum Hossain, Titon Hossain, Md SujanDhali) in Katugastota in Kandy district.

The High Commission said it was immediately established that the four Bangladesh nationals had been duly working in Sri Lanka for a Huawei Project.

The Bangladeshi nationals were on their way to their sites, for official work.

They are supported by Crystal Future Venture Lanka (Pvt) Ltd., a Bangladeshi company which has been doing business in the telecom sector in Sri Lanka. The company employs both Sri Lankan and Bangladeshi nationals. Since the incident, Huawei Project officials also rushed to the Police Station and the Court.

Following the incident, the High Commission said it inquired into the matter with senior Police officials in Colombo and Kandy Division, including the Officer-in-Charge of the Katugastota Police Station.

High Commission officials were looking into the possibility of a linguistic miscommunication behind the incident, the statement said.
