New red samba variety introduced

The Bombuwala Paddy Research Center discovered a novel paddy variety called BW 320 recently. It is a high-yielding samba paddy variety and the grains of rice are moderately long and red in colour.

A maximum harvest of 180 bushels of paddy can easily be reaped in one acre. It is also suitable for all weather conditions across the island. It was also reported that 200 bushels of paddy have already been reaped in a one-acre field in Murunkan, Jaffna.

This new paddy variety is able to withstand every kind of insect diseases, pests and brackish water conditions, and all weather conditions. “Harvests could be reaped within three months and paddy plants would not fall down until the time of harvesting. So harvest can easily be collected through reaping machines,” research officials said.

“This novel paddy variety will be popular among local farmers,” Deepika Weerasinghe, Assistant Director of the Bombuwala Paddy Research Center said.
