Five ways BTS made history this week

Reaching No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with a new album is expected of BTS whenever they have something to deliver, and they don’t have any higher to climb on the ranking, but the same can’t be said for the Hot 100. There is still space for the Korean septet to rise on the all-genre singles list, and it seems like with every new project, they hit a new high.

Their latest album Map of the Soul: 7 has produced the band’s highest-charting cut yet, as new single “On” opened at No. 4 this week, which is not just impressive for them, but for all musicians from their home country.

Here are five ways BTS made an impact inside the Hot 100’s top tier this week.

Second-Highest K-Pop Song

Landing at No. 4 is huge for any new song from any artist, but it’s especially meaningful for BTS, as only one song that could be labeled K-pop has performed better.

“On” is now the second-highest-charting Korean single in U.S. history, coming in behind only Psy’s “Gangnam Style,” which once stalled just one rung shy of running the show.

Third K-Pop Top Five

In addition to both “Gangnam Style” and “On,” only one other K-pop song (or track that could be described as K-pop) has entered the Hot 100’s top five and that’s Psy’s “Gentleman.” The song, which served as a follow-up to his world-dominating smash, peaked at No. 5 on the chart, and it remains one of just three tunes from Korea to peak inside the tier.

Fifth K-Pop Top 10

Just two other K-pop songs have entered the Hot 100’s top 10, but not quite made it to the top five, bringing the total count when it comes to the genre to five top 10s. Joining “Gangnam Style,” “On” and “Gentleman” in the loftiest arena on the chart are two fellow BTS tracks. Previous smashes “Boy with Luv” with Halsey and “Fake Love” peaked at Nos. 8 and 10, respectively.

Highest Debut For A Korean-Language Song

It’s important to note that “On” not only makes it to No. 4, it debuts there. That’s significant, as no other track from a Korean artist has started its time on the Hot 100 quite as high, including the one tune that’s risen higher.

Korean Act With The Most Top 10 Hits

“On” is BTS’s third single to break into the Hot 100’s top 10, which is more than any other musician from their home country has managed. As is clear from the achievements noted above, Psy has pushed two of his cuts into the top region, and until this week, he and BTS were tied for the greatest accumulation of true hits, but now the septet has pulled ahead.
