Promotion of politicians at New Year Festivals banned

None of the Parliamentary election candidates should be promoted at the New Year Festivals to be held during the upcoming festive season of April, National Election Commission pointed out.

Accordingly, the party, symbol or the contesting number of the candidate should not be promoted or highlighted at these events and it is an offence under the Parliamentary Elections Act, said the Director (Planning and Media), Channa De Silva.

Committing such an offence with the consent of any candidate can result in losing the Parliamentary seat of that particular candidate if elected, he also pointed out.

Meanwhile, issuing a letter, the Chairman of the Election Commission Mahinda Deshapriya yesterday informed media organizations to refrain from re-telecasting or re-publishing programs participated by politicians before dissolution of parliament, during this election period.

This includes political programmes, debates, interviews, comedy shows, development programmes, films, teledramas, musical shows, chart shows or any other similar programme.

He said the Election Commission has received several complaints regarding such incidents, through which it gives a special publicity for some candidates and thereby challenging the right of the other candidates to contest on an equal floor.

However, the Election Commission had not received any complaint with regard to the violation of election laws until yesterday (8).
