Vigneshwaran’s party to contest under ‘fish’ symbol

Northern Province former Chief Minister C.V. Vigneshwaran yesterday said that the symbol of their new political party, Tamil National People’s Alliance (TNPA) is the fish.

Even though they had initially requested the image of a ‘Pongal pot overflowing with milk’ as their political party symbol, the Elections Commission has given them the ‘fish’ symbol, Vigneshwaran explained.

He made these observations at a press briefing held in Jaffna recently. He said that their new political party will come to the rescue of the Tamil people who have been betrayed by political parties for decades. Thus, the symbol has less importance, Vigneshwaran observed. He also said that the Tamil National People’s Alliance is dedicated to ensuring that the Tamil people’s objectives are attained. Whichever way the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) operates at the forthcoming general election, the TNPA has already won over most parts of the Tamil community, he observed.

Vigneshwaran pointed out that since the fish is the symbol of the Pandya people, their party symbol will strike a chord in the hearts of Northern and Eastern people in Sri Lanka, as well as in South India and in the other parts of India where there are many Pandya people.

Vigneshwaran also said that most people’s income source in their areas is fishing. In that sense, the symbol is quite appropriate, he added.
