Two factions of UNP must contest as one - Ruwan

Discussions are ongoing between the UNP and the Samagi Jana Balawegaya to contest as one entity, former MP Ruwan Wijewardene said yesterday.

“The UNP will not have a future if it gets divided. All must get together to contest the General Elections,” Wijewardene told a news conference held at Sirikotha yesterday.

"Several groups within the party hope to achieve a greater victory by shattering the party. A future is not visible if the party is divided. Therefore the UNP and the Samagi Jana Balawegaya must get together to achieve a greater victory.”

He also said that the elephant symbol cannot be given up because it is the symbol with which the masses identify the party and the swan symbol cannot be used due to a legal matter.

Wijewardene added that if the elephant symbol is dropped, it will take another five years for the party to contest with the elephant symbol. Therefore he highlighted that elephant is the most suitable symbol to contest the General Elections.
