Dambadiva tours temporarily suspended

The Ministry of Buddha Sasana, Cultural and Religious Affairs has taken steps to temporarily suspend Dambadiva pilgrimage tours due to the rapidly spreading coronavirus fears(COVID-19).

Secretary of the Ministry of Buddha Sasana, Cultural and Religious Affairs Bandula Harischandra speaking to the Daily News said that immediate steps were taken to avoid Sri Lankans getting affected from the COVID-19.

He also said that tour operators and other relevant authorities have been informed to suspend the tours temporarily. “Not only Buddhists, Hindus also engage in Dambadiva tours. Further discussions will be held with the relevant authorities to suspend the tours,” he said.

He said that under the directives of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, the matter was discussed with the Health Ministry. He also added that Civil Aviation Authority and Aviation Service Companies will be notified regarding the situation.

Furthermore, he said that the majority of Dambadiva pilgrims are adults and they are prone to COVID-19 which is rising rapidly across the globe. “Until the situation improves, the tour suspension will continue,” he added.
