Two CID teams search for Ravi, 8 others

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has deployed two teams in search of former Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake and eight others wanted over the Treasury Bond scam.

The Colombo Fort Magistrate issued arrest warrants on Karunanayake and nine others last Friday over the Central Bank Treasury Bond scam of February-March 2015. One of the suspects was arrested on Saturday.

Police Media Spokesperson SP Jaliya Senaratne responding to the Daily News said that MP Karunanayake and eight other suspects are not present at their residential addresses to make the arrests.

SP Senaratne also said that one of the CID teams will use computer technology to track down the suspects, while the other will carry out physical search operations.

Police have so far not questioned the family members of the suspects, the spokesperson said.

Following the issue of arrest warrants, the CID yesterday searched the residence of former Minister Karunanayake at Rajamalwatta, Battaramulla. According to CID sources, the former minister was not available at his residence at the time of the search.

The CID arrested a Director of Perpetual Treasuries Limited (PTL), Muthuraja Surendran who was one of the 10 suspects facing arrest.

The persons on whom the arrest warrants were issued included former Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake, former Central Bank Governor Arjun Mahendran, Perpetual Treasuries Limited (PTL) beneficiary owner Arjuna Aloysius, PTL Chief Dealer Kasun Palisena, Chairman of Perpetual Treasuries Limited Jeffrey Joseph Aloysius, Chitta Ranjan Hulugalle, Muthuraja Surendran, Ajahn Gardiya Punchihewa, Buddika Sarathchandra and Indika Saman Kumara.

Several of these suspects were previously brought before the Presidential Commission of Inquiry investigating the Treasury Bond scam to record their evidence. All 10 of the suspects face charges of conspiracy, criminal misappropriation, cheating and market manipulation in respect of the Treasury Bond auctions of February-March 2015.
