Abduction of girl foiled

Katugastota Police arrested four Bangladesh nationals and two Sri Lankans on Saturday over an alleged incident of attempting to abduct a 12-year-old girl studying in a reputed school in Kandy.

The student had been returning home with her father after attending a tuition class, and when they was passing a deserted area near Manikkumbura in Katugastota, the suspects who arrived in a van had attempted to abduct the girl. The suspects had assaulted the father of the student when he tried to rescue her.

The suspect had fled the scene when the residents in the area hurried to help the child and her father. The police had taken the suspects and the van into custody following a complaint made to Police emergency number 119.

Police said the four Bangladesh nationals are sub-contractors in a private company providing telecommunication facilities. The two Sri Lankans were residents of Kadawatha and Galagedera.

Police said the Bangladesh nationals did not have their passports with them and that investigations were continuing to ascertain whether they have valid visas to stay in the country.

Police have taken steps to inform the Bangladesh Embassy about the four suspects. The reason for the attempted abduction was not yet known.
