No monks, clergy will contest from UNP - Sandith

United National Party or leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has no intention to nominate religious leaders and monks to contest the next general election, former UNP MP Sandith Samarasinghe said.

He stated this speaking to media at ‘Sirikotha’, the party headquarters in Pitakotte yesterday.

Samarasinghe said there has been no policy or a practice within the UNP to give nominations to monks or clergy throughout its history. He said the United National Party will negotiate with the Samagi Jana Balawegaya of Sajith Premadasa until the last minute and submit nomination lists jointly.

According to him, the United National Party would also engage in discussions with the minority parties to contest in selected districts as required.
