No decision yet on SLFP candidates - Prof.Rohana Lakshman

Sri Lanka Freedom Party’s acting Chairman Prof. Rohana Lakshman Piyadasa yesterday told the Daily News that their party will be deciding on the candidates when their politburo and Central committee meet on March 11.

He was commenting on media reports which said that several SLFP leaders had decided to request former President Maithripala Sirisena to join Parliament through the SLPP National List without contesting the General Election.

Reports revealed that some in the SLFP had decided to ask former President Sirisena not to contest the General Election at a meeting held at a Cabinet Minister’s official residence at Mahagamasekara Mawatha, Colombo. It was reported that these leaders of the SLFP came to this decision after discussing the recent remarks made by former President Sirisena which they had deemed were harmful to the Mahinda Rajapaksa-led SLPP.

Prof. Piyadasa said they might have discussed such an option at the Cabinet Minister’s residence but the SLFP Central Committee has not taken such a decision officially.

“Who will contest and who will not is a matter to be determined by the Central Committee of the SLFP which will meet on March 11,” he stressed.
