‘courageous mothers of university entrants to be felicitated’

The Army Seva Vanitha Unit (ASVU), Directorate of Veterans’ Affairs and the Directorate of Personnel Administration extending their range of appreciative gestures of gratitude further, are to honour and recognize committed perseverance of 132 widowed wives of War Heroes in the ‘Weera Matha’ (Mothers of Courage) Project, scheduled to be held on Thursday (12) at the Army Headquarters to coincide with the International Women’s Day.

Conceptualized by Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army, the ASVU, presided by Sujeewa Nelson, during the day’s programme, expects to award special laurels, certificates and gifts to those brave widows, accompanying their sons and daughters, appreciative of their unfailing determination and successful nurture of their teenage offspring until admission to universities.

Those hand-picked mothers of courage, who have been selflessly striving to impart higher education to their children in the absence of their heroic husbands while undergoing numerous difficulties, are to be felicitated and hailed during this special ceremony after inviting those widows with their achievers on stage at the Army Headquarters.

After observance of one-minute silence in memory of their fallen War Heroes, the day’s Chief Guest, Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, together with Sujeewa Nelson and ASVU members would award certificates, laurels and gift parcels to all those widowed mothers and their offspring on the occasion.

The second segment of the day’s ceremony includes the conduct of a special lecture on the importance of ‘International Women’s Day’ and receipt of donations, offered by Lions Club. The event is to be attended by a large gathering of woman soldiers and other invitees.
