Protest against quarantine centre in Hendala continues

Residents of Hendala staged a protest for the second consecutive day, demanding the authorities to reverse their decision to covert the Leprosy Hospital in Hendala into a quarantine facility for passengers arriving from Italy, South Korea and Italy where COVID 19 is spreading rapidly.

They said this hospital which was dedicated to the treatment of patients who have been diagnosed with leprosy is situated in a densely populated area.

They said the health of children attending the nearby school is also at risk if this hospital is turned into a quarantine facility. Heavy traffic congestion prevailed on Hekitta – Hendala and Hekitta – Wattala roads due to this protest which began at 6 a.m. yesterday.

The Health Ministry on Wednesday announced that the Leprosy Hospital in Hendala will be converted into a quarantine facility for passengers arriving in the country from Italy, South Korea and Iran where COVID-19 is spreading at a faster rate than in China.
