Kingswood College Kandy produced a superb performance to upset St. Joseph’s College, Colombo by 24 points (4 tries, 2 conversions) to 17 (3 tries, 1 conversion) in their Dialog Inter-Schools rugby league match played at Havelock Park yesterday.

The school from Kandy played positive rugby throughout and Iranga Sandaruwan’s two tries in the second half proved to be the turning point of the game.

At the end of the first half Kingswood led 14-10.

The Joes started the game well with two tries that went unconverted simply threw away their chances with a disappointing display in the second half as they could only add one more try in the second quarter in contrast to their opponents who managed to turn the game in their favour with two splendid tries.

The Josephians were under tremendous pressure from the beginning with Kingswood threatening to take control of the game scoring early in the 12th minute through Apurva Wijeyasinghe which Ishara Cooray converted.

Joes responded with two back to back tries within the space of 20 minutes through Naveen Marasinghe and Rashen Gunawardene. Both tries went unconverted.

The visitors took another huge step towards creating a major upset when Chethiya Bandara dazzled to score a few minutes before half time. Ishara Cooray scored the extra points and Kingswood led 14-10.

Kingswood made their intentions clear from the start of the second half as they dominated play through some outstanding work from their mobile set of forwards and speedy three quarters.

Iranga Sandaruwan came up with a splendid performance and scored two important tries in the 49th and 65th minute that completely put the Joes off as Kingswood increased their lead to 24-10.

Ten minutes before the final whistle the Josephians made a valiant effort to turn the game around via a try scored by Ruchira Perera which was converted by Rashene Gunawardene but Kingswood held on to create the first upset of the season.
