1000 Housing Units at Stadiumgama

The Cabinet of Ministers approved the proposal presented by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa in his capacity as the Minister of Urban Development, Water Supply and Housing Facilities to build 1000 Housing Units at Stadiumgama.Approval was granted by the Cabinet of Ministers to implement ‘Nagarika Punarjeewana’ project in 2010 and these housing project will be implemented under that project. Approval has been granted to award this contract to M/s Subasinghe Contractors (Pvt.) Ltd for Rs. 1,723.35 million on the basis of design and construction. Cabinet approval has also been granted to build 300 housing units at Obesekara Pura, Rajagiriya.

Permanent houses with new concrete panels in N/E

Cabinet approval has been granted to construct permanent houses with new concrete panels for those affected by the riots/conflict occurred in both Northern and Eastern Provinces. The Cabinet of Ministers have given their consent earlier to construct 28,000 housing units with concrete panels for underprivileged families and 7,000 houses in its first phase with Calicut tiles in the Northern and Eastern Provinces which were badly affected by the conflict.

National Fertilizer Policy

Cabinet approval has also been granted for the preparation of a National Fertilizer Policy. Necessary provisions have been formulated for import, production, preparation and distribution of fertilizer by the Act to formalize the Fertilizer Act No 68 of 1988. The said Act has not been revised up to now and it has been a notable obstacle for the advancement of the said sector due to having no formal national fertilizer policy declaration up to now although measures have been taken to update the act already.

Accordingly, the proposal submitted by Mahaveli, Agriculture, Irrigation and Rural Development Minister Chamal Rajapaksa to the Cabinet of Ministers for the appointment of a Committee comprised of intellectuals in the fields for drafting a National Fertilized Policy and for preparation of a final draft obtaining views of the other relevant parties and the public on the draft prepared by that Committee.

Property Development Institution to be established

The Cabinet of Ministers has also approved the proposal made by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa for the establishment of a State owned Property Development Institution.

Accordingly, the Cabinet of Ministers proposed to take the necessary steps to take Canvil Group (Grand Hyatt), Hotel Developers (Pvt) Ltd (Hilton), Grand Oriental Hotels under one institution owned by the Treasury, Bank of Ceylon and Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation.

Cabinet nod for ‘National Financial Inclusion Strategy’

The Cabinet of Ministers has granted approval for the preparation and implementation of a ‘National Financial Inclusion Strategy’ for the improvement of the financial inclusiveness of Sri Lanka.

The National Financial Inclusion Strategy as well as the Action Plan for that has been prepared for enhancing the financial inclusiveness of Sri Lanka with the contribution of the relevant stakeholders by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.

Protection of intangible cultural heritages

The Cabinet of Ministers approved the proposal tabled by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa as the Minister of Buddha Sasana, Cultural and Religious Affairs for the Establishment of a permanent institutional framework for safeguarding and promoting the intangible cultural heritages in Sri Lanka.

Enhancing ITN’s services

Cabinet approval has also been granted to enhance the main broadcasting complex of the Independent Television Network (ITN) which is the first television channel in Sri Lanka and station to a new venue.

multipurpose building of the Bhikshu University Sri Lanka to Siridatta Construction Works and Darinton Constructions Pvt. Ltd joint venture for Rs. 384.41 million and the respective Value Added Tax..
