Over 885 kilos of narcotic seized

A joint security forces and Police operation has seized 885 kilograms of narcotic, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Ajith Rohana said.

This is the largest quantity of narcotic that was seized in three months, he said. This is revealed at a joint media conference at the Media Centre for National Security (MCNS) in Colombo yesterday.

Navy Spokesman Commander Isuru Suriyabandara said that the haul of narcotic was taken into custody while it was transported via sea route. It is believed that the operation is second only to the humanitarian operation which was carried out to wipe out terrorism.

On the advice of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the security forces and the police are conducting continuous search operations to free the country from drug menus. Besides the 885 kilograms of narcotic, 1,000 suspects have been taken into custody in the three months.

“As an outcome of continuous search operations, Sri Lanka will not be a transits hub for narcotic anymore,” he said. DIG Rohana further said that the network of drug has been identified by intelligence units of the security forces and moves have been taken to destroy the network and apprehend kingpins of the drug network.

Ice is increasingly used in Sri Lanka, DIG Rohana said.

He urged parents to closely observe the behaviour of their children as youth tend to fall prey to drug menace.

The Navy Spokesman said that the 21 suspects taken into custody at the Dikovita Harbour area with narcotic have been identified as eight Pakistanis, seven Iranians and five Sri Lankans.
