Rail drivers call off ‘sick note’ action

Railway Engine Drivers’ Union decided to call off their planned token strike action following discussions with Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday evening.

The Railway Engine Drivers’ Union had planned to launch a 24-hour sick leave strike from midnight yesterday. The railway drivers had earlier decided to strike over a comment made by Minister Wimal Weerawansa.

The Prime Minister yesterday also agreed to meet the railway unions next week to further discuss issues related to the department, a press communiqué issued by the Prime Minister’s media division said.
