Tragic end for Presidential award winning artist

A Presidential Award winning artist who was painting environment friendly murals on the sidewall of a bridge on the Southern Expressway at Yatadola, Matugama died after falling off the scaffolding on March 2.

He was identified as D. M. Wijeratne (75) of Nawututhuduwa, Yatadola, Matugama. He suffered this tragedy while engaged in putting up murals on the sidewall in the company of a youth. Although he was rushed to the Kagughahena Hospital and later transferred to the Nagoda Hospital for treatment, he had succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment in the hospital ICU on March 4.

Wijeratne was helping a group of youth beautify the walls of the area under a programme organized by Matugama Pradeshiya Sabha member Sudesh Lakmal Jayawardene.

Matugama Police is conducting investigations directed by HQI Parakrama Udawatta.
