New 300 mw coal power plant for Norochcholai

A new 300 megawatt coal power plant will be built as an extension to the existing Norochcholai coal power plant to assure an uninterrupted power supply to consumers.

Norochcholai power plant manager Indrasiri Gallage said yesterday that the Norochcholai power plant covers more than 40 percent of the national electricity demand generating 900 megawatts to the National Grid. He made these remarks at a press briefing held at the Norochcholai power plant yesterday.

Despite the prevailing drought, the Norochcholai power plant provides an uninterrupted service eventhough the power generated through hydro power plants have drastically reduced.

Because of this, water at the Victoria Reservoir can still be used for irrigation purposes inspite of the severe drought, he said.

“However, if there is breakdown at the plant there will be a huge negative impact on the national electricity supply If there is a sudden breakdown, it takes several days to repair the machinery due to its high heat. However, Norochcholai power plant engineers are maintaining these machines properly to provide an uninterrupted service.

As an enviornment friendly measure, fly ash of the plant is used for cement manufacturing and asbestos roof sheet manufacturing.

He said a loss of Rs.146 billion has been incurred by not commissioning a new power plant since 2014. That is why we had to go for an emergency power purchasing. This is a big burden to the Treasury.

Therefore, another two LNG power plants and one wind plant are in the pipeline, he said.
