Plan to create 300,000 jobs in IT sector

A target has been set to create 300,000 job opportunities by expanding the country’s Information Technology (IT) sector to a USD 3 billion industry from the present USD 1 billion, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa said.

Speaking to Heads of Media at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday, the President said that IT sector specialists and investors when they met him on Wednesday said that this was a very realistic target.“This century is known as ‘Knowledge Century’. Look at our neighbouring countries and other Asian countries. Their development is mainly based on the technology.

"This is one area we can develop in Sri Lanka. We need to prepare our youth for this purpose by developing their skills. During Wednesday’s meeting, we suggested the IT sector investors the areas where the Government can assist them in developing. We requested them to invest more and create more job opportunities,” he said.

He added that the Government has given priority to develop tourism, agriculture and IT sectors with long, medium and short term plans.
