‘Raththaran’, ‘Sudha’ granted bail

Galle Additional Magistrate Pavitra Pathirana released former Southern Province Supervisory Education Minister Krishantha Puspakumara, alias ‘Raththaran’; and his driver, Withanage Kelum Sameera, alias ‘Sudha’; over the gang-rape of a Chinese national, yesterday.

Their bail was set at Rs.1 million, with sureties of Rs.500,000 each. The magistrate also ordered the suspects’ passports to be confiscated. The victim, a 36-year-old woman, had been allegedly sexually assaulted by the duo in 2018.

The victim was said to have been staying at Puspakumara’s residence for some time before shifting to a house in Kaluwella, Galle. The suspects were said to have stayed at the victim’s house afterwards.

However, the Chinese national had complained to the Child and Women’s Bureau that she had been forced into living with them. An investigation was launched into the matter and the Attorney-General had ordered the suspects’ arrest.President’s Counsel Kapila Waidaayaratha and Attorney Shrimal Wijesekara appeared on behalf of the suspects. The case is to be taken up again on March 18.
