Plans to set up Pirivena Department

Pirivena Board instructed to provide guidelines

The Pirivena Education Board has been instructed to forward the necessary guidelines for setting up a Pirivena Education Department, Education Minister Dullas Alahapperuma said yesterday.

Pirivena education activities are currently being overseen by a Unit under the Education Ministry. The government wishes to expand that administration power to a department, he added.

The minister was speaking at a special ceremony held at the Education Ministry in Battaramulla to provide appointments to 305 new pirivena teachers.

There are nearly 1,200 registered pirivenas countrywide, and they all provide free textbooks and uniforms to students. Therefore, the setting up of a Pirivena Department would be beneficial, Minister Alahapperuma said.

Furthermore, he added that the 305 teaching appointments were made possible by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa’s endeavours to steer the Education sector forward.

Western Province Chief Sangha Nayake Ven. Balangoda Sobitha Nayake Thera and Education Ministry Pirivena Education Director Ven. Watinapaha Somananda Thera were present at the event.
