‘South has made great strides in cinnamon cultivation’

The Southern Province has made great strides in cinnamon cultivation as the country’s total cinnamon cultivation covers 75,000 acres, Thihagoda National Cinnamon Research and Training Centre Research Director G.G. Jayasinghe said.

Jayasinghe also said that two new cinnamon varieties, called ‘Sri Gemunu’ and ‘Sri Vijaya’, have been introduced to farmers recently, and that they have seen significant progress in their cultivation activities.

Furthermore, modern techniques and technology has also contributed to the expansion of the South’s cinnamon cultivation, he said.

The Thihagoda National Cinnamon Research and Training Centre has provided farmers in the South with the necessary fertiliser and equipment, the Research Director said.
