Woman at station hit by oncoming train

A woman awaiting a train on the edge of Platform 6 of the Fort railway station was injured after being struck by an oncoming train on Tuesday afternoon.

The driver of the train, H.R. Somaratne said he immediately stopped the train and made arrangements to dispatch the injured woman to the Colombo National Hospital after summoning a 190 ambulance.

He said the woman is a retired teacher resident in Talaimnnar. He said Rs. 3,908,329 in cash, four gold chains, a gold bangle, a wristwatch, her NIC, passport and bank passbooks found in her handbag were handed over to the stations master (operations).

The victim’s legs had been severed, but she was conscious at the time she was taken into the ambulance.
