Case against Ajith Prasanna fixed for trial

The case filed against retired Army Major and attorney-at-law Ajith Prasanna who was held in remand custody over contemptuous statements slandering the Judiciary was yesterday fixed for day-to-day trial by the Colombo High Court.

The case was taken up before High Court Judge Dhammika Ganepola who fixed the case to be heard on day-to-day basis commencing May 27.

On a previous occasion, the accused, Ajith Prasanna was ordered to be released under strict bail conditions by the Colombo High Court, following his counsel’s undertaking that his client would not make any contemptuous remarks regarding the Judiciary.

Ajith Prasanna was remanded following an inquiry over contemptuous statements made by him criticising Colombo High Court Judge Gihan Kulatunga at a press conference on January 12 in respect of an ongoing court case against former Magistrate Thilina Gamage.

The Attorney General filed an indictment comprising two charges under Section 18 of the Judicature Act against Ajith Prasanna.

Senior State Counsel Janaka Bandara appeared on behalf of the Attorney General and President’s Counsel Maithri Gunaratne appeared for the accused Ajith Prasanna.
