United People’s Front to get symbol soon - Tissa

Former Member of Parliament Tissa Attanayake on Tuesday said the new United National Party (UNP) led party Samagi Jana Balavegaya (United People’s Front) will get a symbol in a few days

“The party members have decided to make a final call regarding the symbol within this week. The party was planning on contesting under the ‘Swan’ symbol but there are legal matters involved. Even the ‘Elephant’ symbol also has legal issues. The ‘Elephant’ symbol has been an embodiment of the UNP for 70 years and through this symbol, the UNP moved forward”.

Attanayake was addressing a press conference at his residence.

He further added the symbol will be of a new and significant political journey of the Samagi Jana Balavegaya and it’s good to have everything new rather than dwelling in the old system.

“For this journey to begin, there should be a new leadership and symbol. I am not saying anybody should be chased, but must all unite to take the party and country forward,” he added.

“We had the impression of obtaining the ‘Elephant’ symbol through the process and regulations of the Elections Commission, but its seems that it won’t happen and the chances are very bleak. The majority of the party rank and file says that we use whatever symbol and contest the upcoming General Elections,” Attanayake said.

He said, “I have seen many elections concerning party symbols and I feel it is pointless creating an unnecessary fuss about all this.Take the recently concluded Presidential Elections, where people said the ballot paper was too long and some people found it hard to find the symbols of the candidates. Yet, there were no issues regarding the election and it was a good voter turnout”.
