The Royal College Colombo B team, not the hot favourites but put up a brilliant performance to emerge winners of the under-13 division II cricket tournament, maintaining their unbeaten status throughout the tournament.

The team entered the tournament without any star players. From the first match against St. Joseph’s College Colombo to the finals against Wadduwa Central College. The captain-wicket keeper batsmen Isula Geeganage led his team from front by scoring 350+ runs throughout the tournament with 6 stumpings. The biggest battle at the knockout stages was with St. Peter’s College Colombo where Royal had already lost the game by the last over. But a tremendously quick direct hit to the wicket by Januga Perera paved the path for Royal to enter its journey to the finals. Ruvindu Jayasooriya with his magic leg spin helped the team to take crucial wickets at crucial times. The quarter-finals was played against St. Sebastian’s where captain Isula Geeganage scored an unbeaten 76 building a partnership with Sasindu Mapa, the vice captain to bring Royal to 189. Sebs started on a positive note, however, the Royal spin wizards Ruvindu Jayasooriya and Tyler Perera did their magic again with the ball damaging the Sebs innings by taking 7 wickets in total to win the match and enter semis.

The semis was played against Weyangoda Bandaranayake College. Royal won the toss and elected to bat first. Once again the captain Isula took the responsibility and scored a steady unbeaten 110. The young duo of the team Tyler Perera and Thevindu Wellalage chipped in scoring 48 and 32 respectively. Isula was unbeaten for two innings and at the semifinals he held his unbeaten stamina till the last ball as the opening batsman. The finals was played on February 19 against unbeaten Wadduwa Central College where the opposition had the power of Sahan, one of their talented players. Wadduwa Central College won the toss and elected to bat first.

The Royal bowlers kept wadduwa very tight and the magic of Ruvindu did the damage by taking the crucial wicket of Sahan and Januga Perera runing almost 30 meters to leap for a brilliant catch. The final target stood at 155. However, Royal lost 5 early wickets for just 65 runs. But in came the game changer of the day, Kemila Govinda who scored an unbeaten 52 changing the game around in favour of Royal. Young Stroke player Thevindu Wellalage supported the innings with a confident 32 while Govinda anchored the non striker end. The coaching team of Royal College was led by the talented Rashan Peiris. Coaches like Prageeth Ferdinandez and Charith Perera are the coaches that nurtured this team from nowhere to champions. The Royal coaching team is also made up of the skills of Nisansala Mendis, Sandaruwan Fernando and Wasantha Satharasinghe.
