SLMC to support Sajith at Parliamentary Election: Hakeem

‘Alliance to pose ‘major challenge’ to government’:

Sri Lanka Muslim Congress Leader Rauff Hakeem said yesterday that his party is to support Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa at the upcoming Parliamentary Election. He added that the alliance would be a “formidable challenge” to the current government. This was mentioned in a press release issued by the SLMC Media Unit. According to the statement, the parliamentarian had said this at a ceremony held to mark the birthday of Indian ‘Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’ Party Leader M.K. Stalin.

Asked about the alleged “ban” on the singing of the National Anthem in Tamil, the MP said that the government has “not banned” but “discouraged” it.

When asked about the Muslim community in the country, Hakeem said that recent tensions have disappeared, and that the situation was returning to normalcy. He added that he hopes the nation would move towards peace and reconciliation while paying no heed to the hate speech of certain politicians.
