PMB provides steady income for Anuradhapura paddy farmers

Over 710 MT of Paddy bought to date:

The Paddy Marketing Board (PMB) has bought 710 metric tonnes of paddy and private millers have bought 520 MT of paddy containing 22 per cent moisture rate in Anuradhapura so far.

Anuradhapura Government Agent R.M.Wanninayaka told Daily News that the 28 PMB purchasing centres and 38 millers are buying paddy for the government.

However, the PMB along with the millers have not bought the minimum requirement of 45,000 MT of paddy from Anuradhapura so far.

Polonnaruwa PMB Regional Manager said the paddy farmers under the Parakrama Samudraya, Giritale, Minneriya and Kawudulla Schemes have not completed their harvesting yet.

So far the PMB has bought only 70 MT and 80 millers that have been registered under the PMB are buying paddy with high moisture rate.

He said they will buy 47,000 MT of paddy from the district.

The Polonnaruwa Regional Office buys the paddy from Baticaloa and Trincomalee and the PMB has so far bought 2,397 MT of paddy from Baticaloa and 175 MT from Trincomalee up to March 3, he said.

Ampara PMB Regional Manager Santha Kumara told Daily News that the 2,249 MT of paddy have been bought from Ampara. Meanwhile, 15 millers have bought 650 MT of paddy. He said paddy dealers buy paddy at Rs. 52 a kilo as the PMB buys at the same price.
