Discount for foreign employees departing from Mattala mooted

The government is considering granting a discount to locals flying out for work opting for the Mattala airport, Industrial Export and Investment Promotion, Tourism and Civil Aviation Minister Prasanna Ranatunga said yesterday.

The government is presently carrying out discussions with the Foreign Employment Bureau to explore this possibility, Minister Ranatunga said.

The government is making the move to make Mattala airport attractive to international aviation services.

According to statistics around 200,000 foreign employees leave the country annually. As per research findings 20% of these 200,000 are from districts that are closer to Mattala airport, Minister Ranatunga observed. Thus, the government is considering making Mattala airport more accessible to these employees, the Minister added.

Minister Ranatunga said Cabinet approval has been granted to this proposal and awaits the cooperation of the Foreign Employment Bureau. He also said that the government has already commenced discussions with the managements of international airline services for promotional purposes.

Minister Ranatunga expressed confidence that the government will be successful in making the Mattala airport active soon.
