Iranians, Paks and trawlers seized off Galle seas

Remanded underworld operator behind drug racket:
Over 400kg Heroin,115kg of ‘Ice’ tablets nabbed:

Fourteen Iranians and four Pakistanis have been arrested from two Iranian trawlers anchored deep seas off the Southern coast.

They have been marking time to off load a stock of heroin to two fishing boats which had set off from Kalpitiya and Mirissa.

A joint operation conducted by the police Anti Narcotics Bureau (PNB) and the Sri Lanka Navy had been successful in the raid.

The two Iranian trawlers had earlier off loaded 75 kilos of heroin and 66 kilos of ICE (crystal Methamphetamine) to two fishing boats which had set out from they Kudawella fishery harbour in Tangalle.

The two small Iranian trawlers engaged in a drug snuggling racket anchored in deep sea were seized and their crew members including 14 Iranians and 4 Pakistanis were arrested in this a joint operation conducted on March 1.

Officers also seized 130 kilos of heroin and 50 kilos of Ice (Crystal methamphetamine) found in the two vessels. The drugs were intended to be off loaded to two fishing boats which had set out from Kalpitiya and Mirissa.

These two trawlers had earlier off loaded 75 kilos of heroin and 66 kilos of Ice to two fishing boats which had set out from the Kudawella fishery harbor on February 28.

A police anti narcotics Bureau spokesman said investigations revealed that a fishing boat had set out from Kalpitiya on March 1 to off load the drugs from one of the Iranian vessels midsea due to a mechanical defect.The racketeers involved had then sent another fishing boat from Mirissa to load the drugs.

These two boats were also seized along with five suspects manning them. All 23 suspects, two trawlers and the two fishing boats were being escorted to the shore under heavy security, Navy sources said.

Police Anti-narcotics Bureau and Navy sources said more than 400 kilos of heroin and 115 kilos of ice had been seized during the operation against drug trafficking within the last few days.

Investigations revealed that an underworld criminal now in remand custody is behind this drug racket.
