HC calls for arrest of former Kolonnawa Mayor

The Colombo High Court issued a warrant yesterday for the arrest of former Kolonnawa Mayor, Ravindra Udeyshantha, for not being present in Court for the case against Tourism Minister Prasanna Ranatunga, his wife, and one other.

Udeyshantha had been listed as a prosecution witness in the case, which has been filed by the Attorney-General (AG) against the accused, who are said to have attempted to extort Rs.64 million from a businessman.

At a previous hearing, summons had been issued on Udeyshantha to testify in court. However, he had failed to arrive and, therefore, a warrant was issued.

The case was taken up before Colombo High Court Judge Manjula Thilakarathne. It will be taken up again on May 21.

The AG had filed indictments against the accused on 15 counts, based on offences said to have been committed between April 6 and June 2, 2015. Furthermore, the Attorney-General has also named 65 witnesses and included 35 articles as court productions against the accused.

Deputy Solicitor-General Thusith Mudalige appeared on behalf of the AG. President’s Counsel Anil Silva; with Senior Counsel Mary Dickmon, Counsel Mihiri Madushani, Visna Wijeratne, and Salani Sederage; appeared for the accused.
