UNP to contest General Election under “Elephant” symbol - Range Bandara

Puttalam district UNP MP Palitha Range Bandara said that the UNP has agreed to contest the upcoming General Election under its political party symbol “Elephant”.

“Only seven persons in the UNP Working Committee have disagreed,” he added.

MP Range Bandara made this observation at a press brief held at Sirikotha yesterday morning.

MP Ravi Karunanayake who was also present at the press brief said that seven Working Committee members include Deputy UNP Leader Sajith Premadasa disagreed with contesting under the “Elephant” symbol at the coming election. He also pointed out that Premadasa proposed an alternative party symbol to which the majority of the Working Committee disagreed.

Asked as to why they are not considering the “Swan” symbol, Karunanayake said that concerning several legal issues pertaining to the symbol, they have given up on using that symbol.

Meanwhile, in reply to a question MP Range Bandara said they decided not to participate in the opening ceremony of the convention of Samagi Jana Balawegaya held at the Sugathadasa stadium yesterday due to their disagreement with the party symbol.

Asked if the UNP will be divided into fractions due to the issue regarding the symbol, MP Range Bandara assured that the UNP shall not be divided due to such matters.

MP Range Bandara was also critical of the present government’s promise to provide 100,000 job opportunities and pointed out that they have failed to fulfill it. Instead the government has postponed it to May, which is after the General Election, he also added.

MP Bandara also said that the government is trying all sorts of gimmicks to mislead the general public with the expectation of winning the coming general election.

He also said that they are ready to give nominations for persons who are ready to give up on Samagi Jana Balawegaya.
