Candidates ready to contest under Pohottuwa symbol - GL

All candidates are ready to contest under the Pohottuwa (Flower Bud) symbol, Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Chairman Prof. G.L Peiris said yesterday.

Addressing a news conference at the SLPP headquarters in Battaramulla, he said there are no legal or political issues that prevent the usage of the Flower Bud symbol at the General Election.

“The Pohottuwa is a prosperous symbol that has links with our culture and it is well recognised symbol by the public. There is no doubt about the outcome of the election result under the Pohottuwa symbol,” he added.

Peiris also said that a two thirds majority is needed to abolish the 19th Amendment which has hindered the government from functioning. “The IGP of the country was arrested and the Executive has no powers to sack the IGP.

An acting IGP is functioning at the moment. These are the effects of the 19th Amendment,” he said.

The final outcome of the General Election is crystal clear and the masses are eagerly waiting to handover a massive mandate to the SLPP led alliance. By now people have identified that the Yahapalana Government has done nothing for the betterment of the country.

If they lasted for several more years, the country would have faced anarchy. National resources were plundered by the international community during the Yahapalana,” Prof. Peiris added.

Irrigation and Rural Development State Minister Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena said the UNP is in turmoil as payback for the ruination they caused in the country.

“The UNP is on the decline day by day. They do not have a single idea about their leader or their symbol,” he said.

“We extended our support to pass the 19th Amendment as former President Maithripala Sirisena said that the 20th Amendment will be proposed later. Yet it did not happen.

The political situation prevailed in the country persuaded us to vote in favour for the 19th Amendment.
