‘Division within UNP will cause supporters to boycott polls’

The present division within the UNP will drive a majority of UNP supporters to boycott the forthcoming general election and refrain from casting their votes on Election Day, Information and Communication Technology State Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena said.

He was speaking at a media briefing at the Information and Communication Technology Ministry auditorium yesterday.

The State Minister invited all such UNPers to cast their votes for the Sri Lanka Nidahas Samagi Bala Sandanaya enabling President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to form a powerful government with a two-thirds majority in Parliament in order to continue to implement the provisions of the national policy document ‘Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour’.

Responding to a question by a journalist who inquired what the government’s stance was on the present division within the UNP, State Minister Abeywardena said that the division within the UNP is not good for the country since a country needs a united, strong, responsible and credible opposition to play its due and effective role in Parliament.

State Ministry of Information and Communication Technology in collaboration with Mobitel introduced a special voice and data package for journalists on the occasion.
