Information and Communications Technology State Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena said it is the responsibility of the government to assist and protect journalists, as they are the ones who inform the public about fraud, embezzlement, and injustice.

He was speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the Matara Press Centre, which has been set up by the Information and Communication Technology Ministry, Government Information Department, and the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon (Ltd).

Abeywardena said that he had instructed all state media institutions, including the ANCL, to publish content that would attract more readers, rather than merely focusing on boosting the government’s image.
