Programme to hone personal financial management skills to be launched

The State Mortgage and Investment Bank (SMIB) has taken measures to implement an islandwide programme named ‘Corporate Social Responsibility 2020’ in order to improve the financial literacy of the public.

Addressing the media yesterday at the Information and Communication Technology Ministry, Development Banking and Loan Schemes State Minister Shehan Semasinghe said that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa through his election manifesto was committed to creating a people-centered economy.

The State Minister stressed the importance of improving personal financial management skills in line with the government’s effort to restructure the economy.

Addressing the gathering, SMIB Chairman Dr. Udaya Sri Kariyawasam said that the financial literacy of Sri Lankans remains at a very low rate of 35 percent and the knowledge, skills and ability of individuals to manage their personal finance is important for their well-being.

“The SMIB has already planned an islandwide programme to make the public aware of financial management. All branch managers have already been made aware of this programme and a special hotline number and other information related to this programme is scheduled to be publicised in the future. This programme is scheduled to be implemented throughout the year,” the SMIB Chairman said.

Secretary to the State Ministry of Information and Communication Technology Prof. Sunanda Maddumabandara and SMIB officers were also present on the occasion.
