State Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage is a well-known figure in the Kandy district because he has been involved in politics for the last 30 years in that district, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa said.

The Prime Minister was addressing the gathering at a ceremony held in Kandy on Sunday to commemorate State Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage’s completion of 30 years in politics, a media release from the Prime Minister’s office said.

The Prime Minister said prior to befriending Mahindananda Aluthgamage, he first knew his father who was in Parliament with them from 1970 to 1977 under the leadership of late Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike.

Thereafter he came to know Mahindananda Aluthgamage. The Prime Minister said he understood the qualities of Mahindananda Aluthgamage more during defeat, when they were in the opposition in Parliament.

The Premier said Mahindananda Aluthgamage portrayed his strength and honesty to the hilt when they were in the opposition ranks. Mahindananda was in the forefront during their Nugegoda rally and all other subsequent political programmes and activities. He fulfilled all responsibilities entrusted to him excellently without relenting or turning back. As a deputy minister and minister he had fulfilled all his responsibilities to the utmost satisfaction of all.

The Prime Minister said it was Mahindananda who filled the void created in Parliament by the demise of former Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle by defending their party and ranks whenever there was a verbal assault on them either from the government or opposition ranks.

The Prime Minister said Mahindananda Aluthgamage was a forthright speaker who never feared to express his sentiments. At one time Mahindananda was restricted to his constituency, but today he has become a politician serving the entire country. Mahindananda is a much sought-after politician by their followers in the North and East because he spoke Tamil fluently as well.

The Prime Minister said above all they valued the service rendered by Mahindananda Aluthgamage in launching a new party and installing their own president in power.

The Prime Minister said he would wish Mahindananda Aluthgamage all strength to continue his service to the country for many more years.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and several other ministers and MPs attended the ceremony.
